Helping Hands Day 2006
Project Descriptions and Organization List
Monday, September 11, 2006 was Mount Vernon's first all school service day and over 800 students, faculty and staff, and parents participated.
Preschool : Students made posters with their painted handprints. The posters were later delivered to agencies that were involved with Helping Hands Day. The four year old and young fives classes teamed up with the third grade classes for a "read to me" reading buddy activity.
Kindergarten - 1st Grade : Students painted murals that were delivered to agencies that were involved with Helping Hands Day. They also colored pictures and cards that were delivered to retirement homes and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
2nd and 3rd Grade : Students participated in several on site service projects including making sandwiches and hygiene kits for the homeless, making cards for residents at Mt. Vernon Village Retirement Community and hand delivering them, teaming with preschool classes for a "read to me" reading buddy activity, making cards for soldiers over seas, and making "Helping Hands Day" posters that were later delivered to agencies involved with Helping Hands Day.
4th- 12th Grade : Students left campus and volunteered at over twenty-five different non-profit agencies throughout metro Atlanta. Please see below for a list of agencies.
Atlanta Children's Shelter
Students planned and participated in activities for the preschool children at the shelter.

Atlanta Community Tool Bank
Students helped repair, sort, and clean tools.

Students helped organize the warehouse. They also assisted with furniture repair and cleaning.

Atlanta Union Mission: My Sister's House
Students visited with the children at the center and also helped in their clothes closet.

Chastain Park Conversancy
Students worked outside at the park to help mulch, pull weeds, rake, and trim bushes.

Community Action Center (CAC)
Students helped shelve food received from the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
Dunwoody Nature Center
Students worked outside throughout the nature center to mulch and plant spring bulbs.

Foster Care Support Foundation
Students helped sort and hang up clothes and toys at this agency that assists foster care families.
Foundation for Hospital Art
Students touched up canvases that were painted by volunteers and men at the Atlanta Union Mission's Carpenter House.

Kashi Atlanta Street Meals Program
Students made over 1000 peanut and butter sandwiches. The sandwiches were given to Kashi Atlanta's Street Meals Program and they hand delivered them people that are homeless in Atlanta.

Keep Sandy Springs Beautiful
Students learned about recycling and helped clean litter on Morgan Falls Road and near the river.

Kool Kidz Foundation
We sponsored an all school clothing, book, and toy drive for Kool Kidz. Students helped sort the items and hang up clothing at the store.

Med Share
Students helped sort medical supplies donated by area hospitals. Med Share distributes the supplies to organizations in need throughout the world.

Mt. Vernon Village
Students made cheerful cards for the residents and then hand delivered the cards to them. The residents loved seeing the children and reading their cards.

Students helped disinfect toys and played with the toddlers.

Students helped organized the books and toys. They also created a craft for the residents.

Students threw a birthday party for the children at the preschool. They made a giant birthday card and brought cake, party favors, and candy for the children.

Students helped clean the animal shelter. They enjoyed seeing the animals and helping make their temporary home cleaner.

Students helped with landscaping and visited with residents.
Ronald McDonald House
Students helped with "spring cleaning." They also visited with the families staying at the house.
