SERVICE : Overview

Community service is an important component of the culture at Mount Vernon Presbyterian School. We recognize and understand the importance of instilling values such as responsibility, compassion, and generosity in our students. We believe that by involving our students in hands-on service activities and teaching them the valuable lessons that come with the Golden Rule we are helping to shape them into great citizens of the future.

The all school service day, Helping Hands Day, is held in the fall. Various service projects are also held throughout the school year and students in grades K-12 are given the opportunity to participate. One such activity is our sandwich making project held in the Fall and Spring. We also hold several collection drives throughout the year including a gently used book and toy drive for area shelters and organizations, toiletry drive for hygiene kits for the homeless, clothing and blanket drives, and our canned food drive. Each Christmas we participate in Toys for Tots and donate truckloads full of toys for Christmas.

One of my favorite quotes about volunteering is the following by Mother Teresa, "We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop." One of the most important lessons that we can teach our students is to be compassionate and give back to the community and that even small hands can make a big difference.

Sincerely,
