UPPER SCHOOL : Clubs

College admissions requirements encourage extended involvement with several activities outside of the classroom. Often, these activities, sponsored by teachers, help to create a more effective student-teacher relationship. To foster the development of our clubs, we reserve two hours each month for activities. Presently, we offer the Outdoor Club, the Chess Club, the Model United Nations, Dramatics, the Law Club, the Math/Science Club, the literary magazine, the World Language Club and the Spirit Club. Each student is required to be active in two of these groups.

ART CLUB

The purpose of the Art Club is to encourage students who are interested and involved in art. Members of the Art Club will help create murals for the school and will participate in other community and school art projects. Our goal is to stay active in the art community.

CHESS CLUB

Research has shown that children who learn chess at school regularly outperform their peers. Children learn concentration, logical thought, planning, pattern recognition, self-discipline, taking responsibility for their own mistakes and much more from playing chess. There are also enormous social benefits to be gained by playing chess: children who do well will benefit in terms of improved self-esteem, as well as having the chance to make friends who share their interest.

DEBATE TEAM

The Debate Team will explore all areas of debate/forensics and compete in the local GISA tournaments.

DRAMA

Students explore the wonderful world of theater and the performing arts. Students learn stage craft, the role of the stage manager, sets, costumes and make up, lighting and special effects, how to write original plays, the art of mime, how to audition and much more.

FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN STUDENTS (FCS)/JUNIOR FCS

The Fellowship of Christian Students is designed to reach out to all Mount Vernon students, families, and community... one heart at a time. Our goal will be to challenge fellow students, teachers, coaches, and administrators to insure that Mount Vernon isn’t just a Christian School by name. FCS will focus on serving our student body by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ. The club will meet once a month but will also sponsor weekly Bible studies, weekend retreats, Christian concerts, and whatever else we can dream up!

FRENCH NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

The French National Honor Society has been established to recognize students that display outstanding scholarship in the study of the French language.

JOURNALISM CLUB

The Journalism Club is a chance to put out a first-class school newspaper, with well-written, well-researched and timely articles and essays, plus appropriate photographs. Students will become acquainted with the different features and aspects of a newspaper and the newspaper craft, while modeling themselves and their newspaper after good writers and media authorities

JUNIOR CLASSICAL LEAGUE

The Junior Classical League is the official club of Latin students and has become well-known throughout the school “world” of students as a large and fun part of their days of taking Latin. The JCL is an internationally known organization. We will have our own charter, dues and officers will be elected.

A Latin banquet is one highlight of the club, when upper classmen (in our case, high schoolers and eighth graders) order about slaves (seventh graders) at the banquet to do their bidding. Students will make their own togas (bed sheets) and tunics (burlap) to wear to the banquet. The food brought by students will conform to that which Pompeiians and Romans actually ate. Other activities involve outdoor Olympic games and other competitions, such as “spelling bees” of Latin vocabulary words and mythology characters.

LAW CLUB

Members will be afforded an opportunity to compete interscholastically (i.e., against other GISA schools inside and outside of our region). Members of the club may join the National Forensic League and compete on the debate team or in Georgia Mock Trial. By participating in either or both teams, you improve your resume and set yourself apart from other college applicants. In addition, you do so while having fun traveling with your friends and classmates.

In addition, students will learn the art of debate, direct and cross examination, opening statements, and closing arguments. We will spend some time debating hot topics and practicing trial techniques.

LITERARY COMPETITIONS

Spring literary competition encompasses music (vocal and piano), extemporaneous speaking, spelling, and essay writing. Students have instruction in these areas through classroom experiences as well as private instruction. Individual abilities will be challenged during competitions.

LITERARY MAGAZINE

The Upper School literary magazine, Revelations, publishes imaginative writing for all MVPS students in grades 9-12. It also features artwork that either illustrates the writing or has special merit by itself. We will submit our art/literary magazine to Columbia University for judging in its annual contest.

MATH/SCIENCE CLUB

The math and science club is designed to culture student interest in mathematics and various fields of science. The club will examine issues that are of student interest that are outside the realm of the classroom. The goal of the club is to foster an appreciation of math and science. In addition to the typical club experience, students will prepare for and compete in various competitions throughout the metro area in the fields of science and mathematics.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS

Model United Nations, or MUN, is part of a nationwide program that offers local opportunities to discuss current issues that are of concern at the UN in New York. Students have the opportunity to participate in a mock United Nations, playing the role of ambassador or other dignitary of a particular country. The participants will become familiar with current and pending issues, voting patterns and other pertinent information in representing that nation. Model United Nations is hosted locally by various colleges and universities including Emory and Georgia State, and at the national level at Georgetown University. After two local MUNs, we will take a group of students to a national Model UN in February.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

A National Honor Society recognizes outstanding students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character.

ONE ACT PLAY

Students have the opportunity to compete as a member of Region 1-AAA in the One Act Play Competition.

OUTDOOR CLUB

The purpose of the Outdoor Club is to increase appreciation of the natural environment through outdoor recreation, study and service activities. Activities will reflect club member interests and the educational objectives of the school. Range of club activities may include introduction to fly fishing, instruction in Skeet and Trap, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, canoeing, hiking, birding, trail building, building a wild life habitat at MVPS, and conservation activities.

PROJECT OUTREACH

Throughout the year students participate in worthwhile activities on and off campus to serve the community at large. An all-school service day, Helping Hands Day, is held during the fall. Students will enjoy the camaraderie of working together and experience the joy of helping less fortunate adults and children.

SPIRIT CLUB

The Spirit Club is an organization designed to ignite school spirit among the student body. Primary duties will be supporting our athletic teams.  The club will also help the Booster Club at times.

“TRUE LIFE”

“True Life” is a club for Upper School girls, whose mission is “Girls helping girls become women.” The letters of the club name stand for Trust, Responsibility, Understanding, Encouragement, Love, Intelligence, Friendship and Excellence. The members hope to become leaders and to be good examples for other girls.

WORLD LANGUAGE CLUB

The purpose of the World Language Club is to promote an understanding of the global community and to explore the variety of cultures through communication. The club will plan activities to promote its purpose such as visits to cultural events, celebrations of international holidays and planning special lunch menus. The club sponsors social, service and educational programs to accomplish its goal of better understanding. The Club will have an upperclassman as President and Vice-presidents from both the Upper School and Middle School for each of the following languages: Latin, Spanish, French, and Chinese. The club will meet in both individual language sessions and joint meetings. Committees will be formed as needed.
