Although we are an academic institution, we subscribe to the old saying that your education begins when you leave the classroom. As a result, we include four hours each month within the school day for our students to participate in clubs and organizations. Structured and supervised by faculty members, seventh and eighth grade students enjoy their involvement with the Chess Club, Drama Club, Junior Classical League, the new Middle School literary magazine, Foreign Languages Club, Math/Science Club, Outreach Club, Personal Fitness Club, and with the School Spirit Club. All students are members of two of these clubs.
CHESS CLUB
Research has shown that children who learn chess at school regularly outperform their peers. Children learn concentration, logical thought, planning, pattern recognition, self-discipline, taking responsibility for their own mistakes and much more from playing chess. There are also enormous social benefits to be gained by playing chess: children who do well will benefit in terms of improved self-esteem, as well as having the chance to make friends who share their interest.
DRAMA
Students explore the wonderful world of theater and the performing arts. Students learn stage craft, the role of the stage manager, sets, costumes and make up, lighting and special effects, how to write original plays, the art of mime, how to audition and much more.
FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN STUDENTS (FCS)/JUNIOR FCS
The Fellowship of Christian Students is designed to reach out to all Mount Vernon students, families, and community... one heart at a time. Our goal will be to challenge fellow students, teachers, coaches, and administrators to insure that Mount Vernon isn’t just a Christian School by name. FCS will focus on serving our student body by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ. The club will meet once a month but will also sponsor weekly Bible studies, weekend retreats, Christian concerts, and whatever else we can dream up!
FITNESS CLUB
The Fitness Club is an organization designed to increase awareness regarding fitness and health throughout the student body. Primary functions will include participation in extracurricular races/walks, guest speakers on food and nutrition, and exploration of various forms of exercise. Overall goal is to create a healthy frame of mind for all members, as well as individuals within the MVPS community.
JUNIOR CLASSICAL LEAGUE
The Junior Classical League is the official club of Latin students and has become well-known throughout the school “world” of students as a large and fun part of their days of taking Latin. The JCL is an internationally known organization. We will have our own charter, dues and officers will be elected.
A Latin banquet is one highlight of the club, when upper classmen (in our case, high schoolers and eighth graders) order about slaves (seventh graders) at the banquet to do their bidding. Students will make their own togas (bed sheets) and tunics (burlap) to wear to the banquet. The food brought by students will conform to that which Pompeiians and Romans actually ate. Other activities involve outdoor Olympic games and other competitions, such as “spelling bees” of Latin vocabulary words and mythology characters.
MS LITERARY MAGAZINE
Anyone in the 7th or 8th grade is encouraged to drop a poem, story, or drawing into the box covered with words in
Mrs. Kintz’s room. When the Literary Magazine meets, we will read a submitted poem or story aloud and discuss its merits and weaknesses. Club members will vote on it for entry to the magazine.
Each year an editor, assistant editor, art editor, fiction editor, and poetry editor will be chosen.
MS MATH/SCIENCE CLUB
The goal of the Middle School Math and Science Club is to foster a love and curiosity concerning Math and Science in Middle School students. This goal will be reached through club members discussing current topics in math and science, and by playing games focusing on math and science skills. Further, in an effort to promote our understanding of the world, we will choose a service project to undertake during the year. Ideally, the project will require us to use practical problem solving skills and teamwork in order to accomplish the desired results.
PROJECT OUTREACH
Throughout the year students participate in worthwhile activities on and off campus to serve the community at large. An all-school service day, Helping Hands Day, is held during the fall. Students will enjoy the camaraderie of working together and experience the joy of helping less fortunate adults and children.
SPIRIT CLUB
The Spirit Club is an organization designed to ignite school spirit among the student body. Primary duties will be supporting
our athletics teams. The club will also help the Booster Club at times.
WORLD LANGUAGE CLUB
The purpose of the World Language Club is to promote an understanding of the global community and to explore the variety of cultures through communication. The club will plan activities to promote its purpose such as visits to cultural events, celebrations of international holidays and planning special lunch menus. The club sponsors social, service and educational programs to accomplish its goal of better understanding. The Club will have an upperclassman as President and Vice-presidents from both the Upper School and Middle School for each of the following languages: Latin, Spanish, French, and Chinese. The club will meet in both individual language sessions and joint meetings. Committees will be formed as needed.
