Each year, Summer Reading lists are created by the librarians and the
faculty. Lists are available for each grade level from
first grade through sixth grade. These lists can also be used as ideas
for age appropriate books throughout the school year.
Dear Parents,
Mount Vernon Presbyterian School places great importance on reading as a part of each student’s life. It is a skill which will affect every aspect of a student’s education as well as leading to lifelong pleasure. To promote these goals, Lower School students are encouraged to do summer reading. The summer reading list is designed to encourage quality reading during the summer as well as offer suggested titles for reading during the school year. A wide variety of books are included in the summer reading list: classic children’s literature, books that entice children to read, books that deal with situations and ideas that are important to children, works that are beautiful presentations of timeless stories, and books that take children to other times and places.

1st & 2nd Grades
Students entering first and second grade are encouraged to read or have read to them five to ten books over the summer. This list includes suggested picture books and chapter books written on their level, however, you may choose other books that your child enjoys. Parents are encouraged to read books with their children or listen to books on tape as this helps to nurture their love of books and reading and also creates a special time for family interaction. To qualify for a “Summer Reading Certificate”, the list of books that were read should be signed by the parent and returned to the teacher during the first week school.
3rd—6th Grades
Students entering third through sixth grade should choose at least three books from the MVPS Summer Reading List or ones from the same authors or series that the student enjoys. Students may choose books from a higher grade but not from a lower grade. Parents may want to be involved in selecting the titles from higher grades. To qualify for a “Summer Reading Certificate”, the list of books that were read should be signed by the parent and returned to the teacher during the first week of school.
6th Grade only
Two of the sixth grade books, listed below, are required reading and the third is their choice.
“Macaroni Boy” by Katherine Ayres (historical fiction)
“Hoot” by Carl Hiassen (realistic fiction)
